Professor Richard Johnstone

Professor Richard Johnstone is the Australian Learning and Teaching Council’s foundation Executive Director.

A graduate of the University of Newcastle in New South Wales and Cambridge University, Professor Johnstone has lectured in English Literature in universities in Australia and the UK and has held a range of senior management positions in higher education. His contribution to Australian higher education was acknowledged in 2001 when he was awarded a Centenary Medal by the Australian government.

Professor Johnstone has worked in senior management roles at three very different types of Australian universities before taking up his current position. He was Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the regionally based Charles Sturt University, Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Sydney and Pro Vice-Chancellor at the University of Technology, Sydney. His responsibilities in these roles entailed a particular focus on matters related to learning and teaching.

Professor Johnstone has been involved in a number of major educational policy initiatives both in Australia and internationally. At the ALTC he has led the development of programs that have been widely recognised for their capacity to enhance the quality of teaching and enhance the student experience.
